High five million for energy switching as new companies join guarantee

Over five million customers have now switched electricity supplier in 2017 topping last year’s figure. The latest figures from Energy UK come as another three major suppliers sign up to the Energy Switch Guarantee (ESG) – which now covers over 90% of the market.

More than 475,000 customers took action to save money by switching provider during November, up by 14 per cent on this time last year. With now more than 55 suppliers to choose from now, nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of the monthly switches were to a small or mid-tier supplier.

In addition, SSE, OVO Energy and Utility Warehouse have now all signed up to the Energy Switch Guarantee, which means that over 90% of the market is now covered by the scheme. The Energy Switch Guarantee is an industry-led initiative through which companies sign up to a series of commitments ensuring customer switches are simple, speedy and safe.

Ofgem numbers estimate that, in addition to those switching supplier, double that number make a change with their current provider. This means that in excess of 12 million households will have actively chosen the best deal for themselves by the end of 2017.

Lawrence Slade, Chief Executive of Energy UK said:

“Over five million customers have now taken action to lower their bills, topping last year’s figure and showing how more and more people are realising how quick and easy it is to save money. If you have not done so already, spend a few minutes contacting your own supplier to find a better deal or switch to one of the 55 plus suppliers out there. It will be well worth the effort.”

Tina Tietjen, Independent Chair of the Energy Switch Guarantee said:

“We’re delighted to welcome three new major suppliers to the Energy Switch Guarantee. It means that even more customers can switch with confidence to suppliers of all sizes covered by the scheme, knowing the process will be simple, speedy and safe.”

Chris Houghton, Managing Director of OVO Energy, said:

“We have built OVO Energy to make life easier and better for our customers and we’re constantly striving to improve their energy experience. That’s why we’re joining the Energy Switch Guarantee, by signing up we’re committed to giving customers a secure and reliable way to switch.”

Tony Keeling, Chief Operating Office of SSE Retail, said:

“SSE is proud to have become a signatory to the Energy Switch Guarantee. The energy market is highly competitive with suppliers competing on both price and service. Customers are responding by shopping around and, this year alone, there have been over 4.5 million switches. By supporting the Energy Switch Guarantee, SSE commits to ensuring a reliable and hassle-free switch in just 21 days.”

Nation’s leading energy switchers revealed

New figures released today by the Energy Switch Guarantee reveal that Yorkshire is home to the savviest energy customers in Great Britain.

The figures (see tables below) show the number of households in each constituency in Great Britain that have switched electricity supplier between September 2016 and August 2017.

Leeds North West contains the country’s most prolific switchers with 23 percent (8,444) of all households having looked to save money by switching provider during this time.

Yorkshire leads the way when it comes to cash conscious energy customers – accounting for seven of the top ten switching areas which also feature Leeds North West, Haltemprice and Howden, Newcastle upon Tyne East, Sheffield Hallam, Leeds North East, Leeds East, Leeds Central, Peterborough, Plymouth Moor View and Pudsey.

The Energy Switch Guarantee – a voluntary industry initiative launched in June last year – is a set of commitments made by suppliers to ensure that switching energy supplier is simple, speedy and safe for customers. It is on track to cover over 90 percent of the market by the end of the year.

Tina Tietjen, Independent Chair of the Energy Switch Guarantee, said:

“Over 4.5 million customers have switched energy supplier so far this year and taken action to reduce their bills by hundreds of pounds a year.

“Our figures show that whilst some areas of the country – like Yorkshire in particular – are taking advantage of the potential savings on offer, others are missing out.

““It can only take a few minutes, so get in touch with your supplier or look online to make sure you are on the best deal for you. There are huge savings to be made and the Energy Switch Guarantee provides customers with extra reassurance that the process will be simple, speedy and safe.”

The figures also reveal that Scottish customers are amongst those changing providers less frequently – Orkney and Shetland appears at the other end of the table with five percent of all properties (1,312) having switched providers.

In total Scotland has eight of the areas with the least amount of switchers which also include Ross, Skye and Lochaber; Argyll and Bute; Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross; Cities of London and Westminster; Na h-Eileanan an Iar; Glasgow Central; Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey; Hayes and Harlington and Dumfries and Galloway.

ENSTROGA signs up to the Energy Switch Guarantee

ENSTROGA has become the fifteenth supplier to sign up to the Energy Switch Guarantee, which commits companies to providing customers with a switch that is simple, speedy and safe.   The energy industry is seeing ever increasing switching levels with over four million customers having changed electricity supplier already this year.  The Energy Switch Guarantee, launched last year by Energy UK on behalf of the industry now covers 75 per cent of the market and is designed to provide extra reassurance to consumers, with a set of ten commitments developed by energy suppliers to guarantee a reliable and hassle-free switch.  Research published earlier this month revealed that nine in ten energy switchers were happy with the process of changing suppliers. Furthermore, over two thirds said that having the Energy Switch Guarantee in place made them more likely to change supplier.

Tina Tietjen, Independent Chair of the Energy Switch Guarantee, said:

“With over half a million customers having switched supplier last month alone, it is fantastic to see ENSTROGA making this pledge. We hope this will encourage other suppliers to follow suit, which we know will encourage even more customers to look at finding a better deal”

Jens Müller-Bennerscheidt, Chief Executive Officer, ENSTROGA said:

“ENSTROGA believes that getting the best energy service should always be simple. That is why we are pleased to demonstrate this by joining the Energy Switch Guarantee. This commitment means customers can save their energy for the important things in life and let ENSTROGA’s trained staff take care of the rest.”

Customers can switch with confidence this winter – thanks to the Energy Switch Guarantee

Nine in ten energy switchers are happy with the process
• Over two thirds say having the Energy Switch Guarantee (ESG) in place made them more likely to change supplier

With the winter months fast approaching and many consumers switching on their heating for the first time this year, it is even more important for customers to check whether they are on the best energy deal and if there are savings to be made.

New research from Energy UK has revealed that over 90 per cent of respondents were satisfied with the switching process. Over two thirds agreed the Energy Switch Guarantee would increase their confidence when changing suppliers and the majority of respondents said it made them more likely to do so.

The Energy Switch Guarantee, launched last summer by Energy UK on behalf of the industry, is a set of ten commitments developed by energy suppliers to provide extra reassurance to consumers that the process is simple, speedy and safe with the whole process managed by the new supplier. The Guarantee now covers 75 per cent of the market.

Latest switching figures from Energy UK show that almost half a million customers took action on their energy bill and changed supplier in August, as part of a total of nearly 3.5 million switches in 2017 so far.

Tina Tietjen, Independent Chair of the Energy Switch Guarantee, said:

“I’m delighted that 90 per cent of those who have switched are satisfied customers. The Guarantee is doing exactly what it was designed for – giving customers the confidence to switch their energy supplier.

“In August almost half a million customers switched supplier, and with more than 50 active providers to choose from, there has never been a better time to shop around.

“It only takes a few minutes to find out if you could be on a better deal.

“Our message to consumers is: Before you flick the switch – switch with confidence with the Energy Switch Guarantee which makes switching simple, speedy and safe”

As new figures show switching is catching on, we bust five myths about switching energy provider.

Think you’ve got your reasons for not switching energy providers? Think again. Figures released today show that in June alone, 400,000 customers made the switch in search of a better energy deal.

One year ago thirteen energy companies launched the Energy Switch Guarantee, a commitment that promises a speedy and safe switch from one energy provider to another.

Now, ever-increasing numbers of consumers are switching to get a better deal – and it really isn’t too much hassle. The industry has upped its game, and it’s now simple, speedy and safe to change providers.

Summer is a great time to shop around for a better deal – so you can switch and save before winter hits. We’ve busted five myths about switching to help you join the 2.6 million people who’ve already made the smart choice to look for cheaper bills this year.

I haven’t got time
It can take as little as 15 minutes to find a better energy deal. Simply contact your current supplier to make sure you’re on the best deal, or use an accredited Price Comparison Website to find another provider that offers you a better deal. Tell them you want to move to them and they will do the rest.

It’s too much hassle
The only thing you need is your energy bill. This contains all the information your new supplier will need to have.

They’re all the same
With so many deals out there and over 50 suppliers in the market, now really is the best time to switch. Whether you’re looking to save money or seeking a better standard of customer service, the Energy Switch Guarantee lets you switch with absolute confidence.

Something is bound to go wrong
All energy providers use the same wires and pipes so there is no risk of your energy supply being interrupted. Once you have signed up to switch, your new and current energy providers will work together to make sure you are not charged twice for the same energy.

It will cost me money
Switching won’t cost you a penny. Your new energy provider will send you details of your new energy supply agreement for you to check, and you will have 14 days to change your mind. If you cancel within this time, you will stay with your current provider. If there are any problems with the switch, your new provider will contact you as soon as possible and will be responsible for putting the matter right.

Industry launches new Energy Switch Guarantee

Customers can switch energy supplier in the certainty the process will be quick, easy and hassle-free. The new Energy Switch Guarantee has been designed to allow more consumers to benefit from the deal which best suits them. It sets out ten commitments for the switching process to promote: confidence; understanding; and willingness to switch.

Signatories of the Guarantee currently represent around 70 per cent of the energy market, with more suppliers expected to follow. The Guarantee commits suppliers to working together to ensure customers are confident in switching. It also means that, on the rare occasions a switch goes wrong, companies will sort out any concerns quickly and smoothly.

Tina Tietjen, independent chair of the Energy Switch Guarantee said:

“Customers can have the confidence that, when they choose a new energy supplier, they can switch without any worry. The new Energy Switch Guarantee will ensure energy companies work together so customers can benefit from the many energy deals on offer.

The Guarantee is a major commitment by suppliers  from the largest to some of the newest suppliers in the market and it aims to reassure consumers who may have reservations about switching. It also means that, on the very rare occasion anything goes wrong, customers will have the assurance they need that the issue will be resolved by their supplier.

More and more companies are working to ensure they can meet the commitments of the Guarantee. It already covers around 70 per cent of the market and it has an ambition to reach over 90 per cent by October 2016. But it will not be enough to just sign up, companies have high standards to meet and maintain. I will be holding them to account in the interests of all customers.”
